Yaozhou kiln blue-glaze carved “Wu Niu Chuan Yue” bowl, gold, 7.6 cm high, 21.3 cm caliber, 6 cm foot diameter
The bowl is open, with deep arc wall and round foot. The whole body is painted with blue glaze inside and outside. In the bowl, a bright moon is carved in the diamond light, hanging high in the sky. A buffalo has upright front legs, bent back legs, kneeling, head raised, mouth slightly open. The water buffalo is carved with flowers and grass patterns around and outside the open light
The glaze of this bowl is as bright as jade, the carving knife technique is smooth and sharp, and the composition is simple and bright. It is an excellent work of Yaozhou kiln
The design in the heart of the bowl was originally named “Rhinoceros Watching the Moon”, which was verified to be “Wu Niu panting the moon”. It comes from Shishuo Xinyu: “Today’s buffalo only lives in the Jianghuai River, so it is called Wu Niu. It is hot in the south, and this buffalo is afraid of the heat. It is doubtful that it is the sun when it sees the moon, so it gasps when it sees the moon.” The pattern reflects the deep fear of the Han people under the rule of the Jin people in the north for the heavy life pressure brought by the war.
