Wang Shen Fishing Village Snow Map

[Wang Shen Fishing Village Snow Map Volume]

“Fishing Village Snow Map” volume, made by Wang Shen in the Northern Song Dynasty, silk version, color setting, 44.5 cm vertically and 219.5 cm horizontally
Describe the forest scenery of the fishing village after the light snow in winter. In the picture, there are strange pines on the snowy mountains and fishing boats on the bank of the river. The road turns and the scenery is easy to move. The artistic conception of the whole picture is bleak. It is shrouded in an ethereal and quiet atmosphere. Although there are fishermen working hard, it reflects the elegant feelings of literati who yearn for the secluded life in the mountains and forests. This picture is the work of Wang Shen, who imitated Li Cheng. In the picture, the stone gouge is made with a side sharp short pen, and the edge outline is made with “ink breaking method”. After the outline is drawn, it is melted inward with clear water, and the ink color is light. The pine trees in the cold forest use the center and thick ink, which highlights its noble character of being cold and not withering. In order to show the snow cover, in addition to leaving the mountains blank, the author also applied white powder to the peaks, branches and sand feet. In order to express the sunshine after snow, the author also dyed gold powder on the tree head and reed tip, and absorbed the painting method of the golden and blue landscape since the Tang Dynasty in the whole painting, which is a creative practice. This painting fully reflects the creative theme of literati painting in the Northern Song Dynasty, which emphasized “painting in poetry and poetry in painting”. It is a typical work of “unity of poetry and painting” to write “the difficult scene of poets and painters” with skillful techniques.
