[The Painting of Cold Sparrow by Cui Bai]
The Painting of Cold Sparrow by Cui Bai in the Northern Song Dynasty, printed in silk, colored, 25.5 cm in length and 101.4 cm in width
There is a poem written by Emperor Gaozong of the Qing Dynasty with the inscription “Cui Bai”. After the volume, there is an inscription on Peng
The picture depicts dead trees and 9 sparrows flying or perching in them. Nine small birds scattered among the trees in a state of flying, singing and moving, forming three groups naturally. The composition is ingenious and the layout is appropriate. There is both division and connection between movement and stillness
The author painted sparrows and tree trunks with dry and wet ink and flexible strokes. The sparrow’s pen is dry and light. The branches and trunks of trees are mostly made of dry ink, chapped and haloed, without any scratch marks, which is obviously different from the creation techniques of flower and bird paintings of Huang Quan School. Although the picture is still exquisite and elegant in terms of situation and style, the peaceful and rich features that dominate the flower and bird paintings of the Northern Song Dynasty have disappeared from Cui Bai’s works, reflecting that the palace flower and bird paintings of the Northern Song Dynasty have entered a new stage in aesthetic perception. Cui Bai’s new flower-and-bird painting has changed the unified pattern of Huang Quan’s painting school, which has spread for hundreds of years, and promoted the development of flower-and-bird painting in the Song Dynasty.
