White Jade Riding Phoenix Man, Song Dynasty, 7.8 cm high, 5.4 cm wide and 2.2 cm thick
The white jade, three-dimensional round-shaped high bun hairpin flower fairy sits on the back of the phoenix, with the sleeves flying. The phoenix carries clouds under its body, and its tail spreads like a flower. The phoenix tail and the flowing clouds are both double-layer openwork. The phoenix wings are fully decorated with parallel yin lines and divided by a horizontal yin line. These are typical features of jade carving in the Song Dynasty
This jade carving represents the story of “playing jade and riding Luan”. According to Liu Xiang’s “Biography of the Immortals” in the Han Dynasty, Qin Mu Gong was a famous Xiao Shi who was good at playing the flute. Duke Mu’s daughter Nongyu admired him very much and married Xiao Shi. Xiao Shi taught to play jade and phoenix. Therefore, Duke Mu built Fengtai for Xiao Shi and Yu. Two people have lived in Fengtai for several years. One day, both of them go by phoenix. This story is extended in later generations to get a good mate or a woman to become immortal. The jade carving works with this theme are very rare, and this is the only one seen at present
