The Avalokitesvara with thousands of hands and thousands of eyes is one of the six Avalokitesvara, whose image has appeared no later than the Tang Dynasty. The earliest such statue found today may be the eight-arm and four-arm Guanyin in the Taipei Cave of Drum Beating in Longmen East Mountain, Luoyang, Henan Province. The small niche above it has the inscriptions of the first year of Dazu and the first year of Chang’an (701) in the Wu Zhou Dynasty. Avalokitesvara with Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes is a common theme in Buddhist statues of Tang, Five Dynasties and Song Dynasties, such as Sichuan Anyue Reclining Buddha Temple, Anyue Yuanjue Cave, Anyue Thousand Buddhas Stronghold and Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing. There are two popular styles: one is to carve a thousand hands and a thousand arms, with one eye in each hand; The first is the combination of the two hands in the center, and the other 20 hands on the left and right, each representing 25 hands, which is a total of thousands. Thousand-handed and Thousand-eyed Goddess of Mercy is considered by Buddhists to be more sensitive to the people’s feelings because of its many eyes and hands, and has a great compassion, so it is deeply loved by people.
