Picture scroll of Hu Huan and Zhuo Xie

[Hu Huan Zhuo Xie Picture Volume]

Zhuo Xie Picture Volume, Five Dynasties, Hu Huan’s work (biography), silk, color, 33 cm vertical, 256 cm horizontal
This picture was painted by Hu Huan, a Khitan painter of five generations. According to the features of most of the characters in the painting, such as Kun Ding, hair style with double braids hanging behind the head, and square top black scarf, it is the custom of Nu Zhen in the Jin Dynasty, so it is very likely that it was written by Han painters in the Jin Dynasty
The full volume painting depicts the scene of the Nuzhen nobles inviting the envoys of the Southern Song Dynasty to feast and watch the dance during the hunting break. The first half is the rest part. The prey on the horse’s back is dotted with people and horses. They have just changed from chase and noise to static. At the end of the horses is the flower girl who walks to the music and dance venue, organically combining the rest and music and dance. The dancers jump under the accompaniment of the harp, forming the climax of the whole picture, showing the author’s artistic ability to deal with the movement and dispersion of the people and horses in the big scene, which is full of the strong flavor of life of the northern grassland nationality
At the beginning, there is the “Fanbu Zhuo Xie Tu” written by Zhang Zhaoshu of the Qing Dynasty, the “Zhuo Xie Ge” written by Emperor Qianlong, and at the end, there are postscripts of the King of the Yuan Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty’s Gaoshiqi and Zhang Zhao
This picture is described in Ruan Yuan’s “Essays on Shiqu”, Gao Shiqi’s “Calligraphy and Painting Catalogue of Jiangcun”, and the “Collection of Shiqu Treasures – Continuation” in the Qing Dynasty.
