[Jade Lion]
Jade Lion, Tang Dynasty, 6 cm long, 4.5 cm wide and 1.5 cm high. The old collection of the Qing Palace
It is made of lion white jade with slight grain cracks. The lion’s round sculpture horizontal hair is in the shape of multiple locks of spiral hair, with circular eyes, broad mouth, four limbs lying on the ground, spiral stripes on the elbow, and spiral stripes on the tail running up from behind
The Tang Dynasty tricolor works with the same image as this beast were unearthed in the underground palace of Famen Temple in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, which proves that this work was made in the Tang Dynasty. This work can help us understand the situation of spiral patterns on the elbow in the shape of jade animals in the Tang Dynasty.
