北极阁位于南京市鼓楼区鼓楼东面，又名鸡鸣山、钦天山，北依明城墙、玄武湖，西连鼓楼岗，东连覆舟山，南朝时为皇家苑囿之一。

明代朱元璋在此建“观象台”，又名“钦天台”，鸡笼山南设国子监（即现东南大学四牌楼校区），这是十四、五世纪中国最大的国立大学。
