Edward· Edouard Chavannes (1865— 1918) is recognized by academia as the world’s most accomplished master of Chinese learning at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was born in a Protestant family in Lyon, France, in 1865 and graduated from the Paris Higher Normal University. In 1889, Sha Wan, 24, went to Beijing as an interpreter of the French Mission in China. After coming to China, with the help of Tang Xiali, Counsellor of the Qing Dynasty Embassy in France at that time, he began to translate the Historical Records. In 1893, Sha Wan was ordered to return to Paris and preside over the French Academy“ Chinese and Manchu Language and Literature” lecture. At the same time, he also teaches in the Department of Religious Science at the Oriental Language Institute, Sorbonne University and the Experimental Institute of Higher Studies in Paris
In 1907, Sha Wan came to China for the second time& mdash; Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces were investigated. He made great achievements in archaeology and inscriptions in these areas, especially in Longmen and Yungang Grottoes, and became the first person to systematically investigate these caves. He died in Paris in 1918

爱德华·沙畹（Edouard Chavannes，1865—1918）是学术界公认的十九世纪末二十世纪初世界上最有成就的中国学大师，1865年出生于法国里昂一个新教徒家庭，毕业于巴黎高等师范学院。1889年，24岁的沙畹以法国驻华使团译员身份前往北京。来华后，在当时清朝驻法使馆参赞唐夏礼的帮助下着手翻译《史记》，1893年沙畹奉命回到巴黎，主持法兰西学院“汉语及满语语言和文学”讲座。同时，他还在东方语言学院、索邦大学、巴黎高等研究实验学院的宗教科学系授课。
1907年，沙畹第二次来到中国，对中国北方——河北、山东、河南、陕西、山西诸省进行考察。他在这些地区，尤其是在龙门和云岗石窟地区，在考古和碑铭方面取得了重大收获，从而成为第一个系统地考察这些石窟的人。1918年，在巴黎去世。

1907年的龙门西山，看上去这些遗迹都已经很残破了。从照片上看卢舍那大佛还有手臂！现在没有了
潞泽会馆，现民俗博物馆。前面的文昌楼、魁星楼和琉璃墙，七十年代拆除。
1907年的洛阳白马寺。白马寺曾两度在战火中败落，彼时的白马寺墙颓殿倾，野草没膝，一片荒凉景象，一直持续至解放前夕。如今的白马寺经修复后，又香火鼎盛。
