In April 1898, France forcibly occupied Haitouxun (Jinxia Mountain), Suixi County, and then expanded to the mainland on the east and west sides. On November 16, 1899, China and France signed the Treaty of Concession between China and France in Guangzhou Bay, which divided part of the land and islands of Suixi and Wuchuan counties, as well as the Maxie Bay (today’s Zhanjiang Bay) between the two counties, into French concessions, collectively called“ Guangzhou Bay”.
