British John· John Thomson was not the first Westerner to take pictures in China, but he was the first Western photographer to take pictures and spread them most widely in China. During the three years from 1869 to early 1872, John· Thomson set out from Fujian via Hong Kong, from coast to inland, from south to north, and traveled to most parts of China. He not only photographed the scenery and buildings along the way, but also recorded the living conditions of a large number of dignitaries and ordinary people in the late Qing Dynasty from the anthropological perspective prevailing in Britain at that time. From senior officials of the Qing Dynasty, such as Gong Qin, Wang Yixin and Li Hongzhang, to street vendors and pawns, even to beggars hiding in tombs, these are valuable cultural images left for China in the middle and late 19th century
