On April 17, 1895, after the defeat of the Sino Japanese War, the Qing government signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki with the Japanese government, ceding Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan. On May 29, the Japanese army began to attack Taiwan, which was resisted by the Taiwanese army and people. However, in front of the powerful firepower of the Japanese army, Taiwan was defeated by the occupation. Keelung fell on June 3. On June 7, Taipei fell. On June 17, the first Japanese Governor of Taiwan, Hirayama Ziji, held the inaugural ceremony in Taipei, formally establishing colonial rule in Taiwan. On September 16, Japanese troops marched into southern Taiwan by land and sea. By October 21, the Japanese army had occupied Tainan Prefecture, and the whole island of Taiwan had been occupied
