Tianshui was located in Mianzhu County and Shanggui County in the Western Han Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty was Shanggui County of Qinzhou. The Yuan Dynasty was Chengji County of Qinzhou. It was abolished in the Ming Dynasty and entered Qinzhou in the formative period. In the seventh year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1729), Qinzhou was promoted to Zhili Prefecture, which was subordinate to Gansu Province and was proclaimed as a political envoy. In February of the second year of the Republic of China (1913), Qinzhou was changed into Tianshui County directly under the Central Government, governing today’s Shuicheng District

There are very few old photos about Tianshui getting up early. At present, there are two groups. One group is about 1870, only two. One group was taken by Mannerheim during his investigation in northern China from 1906 to 2008

天水南廓寺（南山寺）

天水南廓寺俗称“南山寺”，位于天水市城南二公里的慧音山坳，建寺已有一千多年的历史，这里风景优美，古树参天，有汉柏唐槐的传说。唐乾元年间，杜甫流寓秦州，曾有题咏：“山头南廓寺，水号北流泉。老树空庭得，清渠一邑传。秋花危石底，晚景卧钟边。俯仰悲身世，溪风为疯然”。

南廓寺庙殿隋唐时已初具规模，宋代称“妙胜院”，清乾隆十五年敕赐为“护国禅林院”，清光绪年间将原东禅林院改为杜少陵祠。南廓寺西牌坊门前有两株千年古槐，围达9.7米，树高25米。
