巴楚，是巴尔楚克的简称。《西域图志》作巴尔楚克，《西陲要略》作巴里楚克。

据《西域同文志》释：“巴尔楚克，全有也。地饶水草，故名。”维吾尔语称作玛热勒巴什，旧有玛喇巴什、毛拉巴什等不同译名，意为鹿首。

清光绪九年（1883年）置玛喇巴什直隶厅，属喀什噶尔道。光绪二十九年（1903年）直隶厅改设为州，称巴楚州，隶莎车府，下辖八大庄。1913年改设巴楚县，属喀什噶尔道。
