The Sino Japanese War: Lushunkou Fall (1)-China Archive

This post is a real war photo taken by Japanese army reporters in the same year. It mainly reflects the battlefield situation of Lushunkou captured by Japan in the Sino Japanese War of 1894. The photo is mainly taken from Japanese war pictorials issued in that year, such as Japanese Qing War Photo by the photo class of the Land Survey Department of the Japanese Army Staff Headquarters, and Japanese war pictorials such as the photo photo of the Battle of the Twenty seventh and Eighth Years of the Meiji era by Toei Zmin

Lushunkou is located at the southernmost tip of Liaodong Peninsula, facing Weihai Weihai across the sea, which is the gateway of the Bohai Sea. In 1880, the Qing government built shipyards, forts, factories, warehouses, telegraph offices and other military facilities here as the base of the Beiyang Fleet. Lushunkou has a lot of forts. By the time of the Sino Japanese War, there were 12 old and new forts on the east and west coasts, more than 70 coastal guns of all kinds, and 17 land forts built near mountains, nearly 80 large and small guns

1894年11月17日，日军在大连休整了十天之后，开始向旅顺进攻。18日，日军控制了旅顺陆路咽喉南关岭，前锋进至土城子。旅顺危急，诸将互不统属，公推姜桂题担任临时指挥。姜桂题无所作为，坐待敌攻。这时，只有徐邦道率领残军主动迎战。19日，徐部在土城子南面同敌人先头部队遭遇。徐邦道挥军奋击，将敌截为数段，重创日军，一直追击至营城子西南的双台沟。由于日军不断增援，徐邦道兵力薄弱，又没有后援，整整激战了一天，士兵饥饿疲乏，只得退回旅顺。

土城子战斗后，日本第二军继续向旅顺进逼。19日晨五时，各部队从营城子出发。20日，已全部到达准备发起攻击的出发地。徐邦道再次主动出击，20日下午，清军分两路向石嘴子进袭。但由于日军占据了有利地形，清军的进攻受阻。日军在高地架起野炮和山炮，据高猛轰山谷里的清军。第一师团本队及混成第十二旅团也分兵来战。双方战至日落西山，暮色朦胧，徐邦道见以寡敌众，终难取胜，便下令撤退。

21日，日军舰队在港外游弋，牵制旅顺东西炮台的清军，陆军则集中兵力向旅顺口各炮台发动总攻。是日，椅子山炮台为日军攻占，接着，案子山、松树山、二龙山等各炮台相继失陷。清军东岸守将黄仕林不作任何抵抗弃台而走，日军便轻易占领黄金山炮台。东岸之摸珠礁、老砺嘴等炮台守兵见主将已遁，亦皆不战而奔。此时，西岸炮台还在守将张光前的指挥下坚守不退，直到夜幕降临，西岸炮台还在清军手中。是夜，张光前率队循西海岸向北撤退。至此，旅顺口终于全部陷落。
