Jiangnan Gongyuan was built in the Song Dynasty (1168), and expanded in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, becoming the largest imperial examination venue in China. During the period from the Qing Dynasty to Tongzhi, the scale reached its peak, covering an area of more than 300000 square meters. There were 20664 stalls, and more than half of the officials in the Ming and Qing dynasties came from here
