In 1905, Mayer, then 30 years old, was sent by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to China for the first time alone to explore and collect woody plants. After three years of work, he returned to the United States in 1908. Later, he came to China three times from 1909 to 1911, 1912 to 1915 and 1916 to 1918 to continue his exploration
On May 28, 1918, he returned to Shanghai by boat along the Yangtze River, ready to return home. But three days later, on May 31, he disappeared mysteriously. A week later, on June 5, his body was found in the Yangtze River. Only 43 years old
