1869 Old photo of Fuzhou, Fujian taken by Thomson
British John· John Thomson was not the first Westerner to take pictures in China, but he was the first Western photographer to take pictures and spread them widely in China. In April 1862, 25 year old John· Thomson came to Singapore from Edinburgh, England to open a personal photography studio, and began his 10-year Asian documentary photography trip. During the three years from 1869 to the beginning of 1872, he concentrated on traveling and filming all over China. John· Thomson set out from Fujian via Hong Kong, from coast to inland, from south to north, and traveled to most parts of China. He not only photographed the scenery and buildings along the way, but also recorded the living conditions of a large number of dignitaries and ordinary people in the late Qing Dynasty from the anthropological perspective prevailing in Britain at that time. From senior officials of the Qing Dynasty, such as Gong Qin, Wang Yixin and Li Hongzhang, to street vendors and pawns, even to beggars hiding in tombs, these are valuable cultural images left for China in the middle and late 19th century
This group of photos comes from the website of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each photo has a specific title, most of which are marked with the date of 1869, and some of which are marked with other dates. Author tags are also divided into“ Johm Thomson” And“ Attributed to John Thomson” Two, but their proportions are quite different
The photos of Fuzhou below are marked“ Attributed to John Thomson”, So we can only say that most of these photos may be taken by Thomson, some of them may not be taken by him, or they may be marked in the wrong place
ps: The number and English mark below each photo are original marks, and I have not changed them. The part of Chinese characters was simply translated by me with the help of software. Some place names may have errors. I hope you can point them out
