Old photos of Simao, Yunnan in 1922; Photographer Joseph· Locke
Joseph· Born in Vienna on January 13, 1884, Rock (Joseph Francis Charles) was an adventurer since childhood. He always dreamed of traveling and tried to learn foreign languages by himself. In 1905, Locke came to the United States alone. In 1911, he officially became a professor of botany at the University of Hawaii. From 1920 to 1921, he was sent by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to Thailand, Myanmar, India and other countries to conduct a one-year search for the species of hyacinth. In 1922, after entering China via Myanmar, Locke arrived in Yunnan in mid April
Simao District, subordinate to Pu’er City, Yunnan Province, is located in the south of Yunnan Province, the middle and south of Pu’er City, and the middle and lower reaches of the Lancang River
Once Simao was an important town and trade center in southern Yunnan
Simao District was an ancient tea and horse road in history— The starting point of the Southern Silk Road is one of the three major customs towns in Yunnan, enjoying the right to; Jintengchong, Yinsimao” It was once the trade center of southern Yunnan because of its developed commerce, and the Yin Mansion of Pu’er Road was also stationed here. At its peak before 1919, there were 22 streets in the city. Here merchants gather, the streets are noisy, business is booming, and the population is extremely prosperous. Through investigation and research on the land, wells, village sites and other historical sites in Simao dam area, the population in the peak period of Simao dam area was between 70000 and 80000
However, since 1919, Simao dam area has experienced a large-scale malaria epidemic. During the past three decades, the population in Simao dam area has decreased dramatically. By 1949, when Simao was liberated, the population in the dam area was less than 2000, and Simao was in extreme suffering
The founding of New China ushered in a new turn for the dam area. From epidemic prevention and medical treatment to people’s livelihood economy, the local decline was greatly reversed, malaria was defeated and the city was rebuilt
Fortunately, this group of photos preserved the scene of Simao where malaria was just becoming popular. Although Simao at that time had begun to decline, this complete historical image was rare
The following photos were taken at that time. Welcome to view them
