The photo collector of this group is Edward Bonstrow, an Englishman who was born in 1843 and died in 1924. The Chinese called him Dudewei. He graduated from Harvard University and was invited by Robert Hurd, the General Tax Department of the Customs of the late Qing Dynasty. He worked in China from 1868 to 1908. He once served as the Commissioner of Fuzhou and Ningbo Customs. During his stay in China, Eduardo Bonsdru collected and took a large number of photos, which covered a wide range of topics, including society, scenery, and culture in the late Qing Dynasty. After the Opium War, Fuzhou was officially opened as one of the five ports in the 24th year of Daoguang (1844). 本组照片收集者为：爱德华.邦斯德鲁，英国人，生于1843年，于1924逝世。中国人称他杜德维，毕业于哈佛大学，受晚清海关总税务司罗伯特.赫德之邀，于1868年至1908年在中国工作，曾出任福州与宁波海关关长。爱德华邦斯德鲁在华期间，收藏拍摄了大量的照片，照片内容广泛，涉及晚清社会、风光、人文等。图片清晰，有许多属经典之作。

鸦片战争之后，道光二十四年（1844年）福州作为五口之一正式开埠。自道光二十五年（1845年）南台岛的英国领事馆建立起，先后有17个国家在福州设领事馆。道光二十七年（1847年），基督新教开始在福州传播，并在此后创立了许多教会学校和福州最早的报纸和期刊。
