玉泉寺位于湖北省当阳市城西南12公里的玉泉山东麓，中心景区面积8.9平方公里。相传东汉建安年间，僧人普净结庐于此。南朝后梁时，梁宣帝敕玉泉为“覆船山寺”。隋代改为“玉泉寺”。玉泉寺大雄宝殿为中国南方最大的一座古建筑。

玉泉寺为佛教圣地天台宗祖庭之一 ，曾与浙江天台国清寺、山东济南灵岩寺、江苏南京栖霞寺并称为“天下四绝”，被誉为“三楚名山” 。

玉泉寺 铁塔

玉泉寺前三园门北侧青龙山馀脉冈地上有玉泉铁塔一座。铁塔本名“佛牙舍利塔”，俗称“棱金铁塔”、“千佛塔”，北宋嘉佑六年（1061年）为重瘗唐高宗、则天皇后所授舍利而铸建，仿木构楼阁式，八角十三级，通高16.945米，重26472公斤。

玉泉铁塔是我国现存最高、最重、最完整的一座铁塔，它对研究中国古代冶金铸造、金属防腐、营造法式、建筑力学、铸雕艺术以及佛教史具有十分重要的价值。
