临夏州境,春秋时期,为羌、戎之地;战国末期属古雍州之城。秦朝时,初为罕羌侯邑,后置枹罕县。民国二年(1913年),府、州制废,改置为导河县,属甘肃省兰山道;民国十六年(1927年),废道改区,属兰山区;民国十七年(1928年),更名临夏县。
临夏是古丝绸之路南道要冲、唐蕃古道重镇、茶马互市中心,是文成公主进藏的途经之地,素有“西部旱码头”、“东有温州、西有河州”的美誉。
