Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991), the hero of this article, began his career in Rotterdam of the China Netherlands Trading Company (HCHC), and then came to work in the Hong Kong office. In 1938, he went to work in Shanghai Company. Between 1943 and 45, the Japanese arrested him and most other Dutch nationals. In the camp where he was arrested, he met his wife, Nancy, and they married after the war. After vacationing in Holland, they both returned to the East, and Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong
