Benxi Lake Coal and Iron Company is located in Xihu District, Benxi City, Liaoning Province. It was founded in 1905 by Japanese chaebol Yoshiro Okura. It was the first large industrial and mining enterprise established by Japan after its invasion of the Northeast; No. 1 and No. 2 blast furnaces are among the earliest iron making blast furnaces in China; Caitun mine shaft was once called“ The largest shaft in Toyo”; In 1942, the largest mining accident in human history occurred (more than 1500 people died). Benxi Lake’s high-quality coal and iron have played an important role in the economic invasion of the Northeast by Japanese imperialism. Therefore, until the surrender of Japan in 1945, Japanese imperialism controlled the Benxi Lake Coal and Iron Company for a total of 40 years
Benxi Lake Coal and Iron Company is the first large-scale modern joint enterprise established by the Japanese invaders in China, which consists of coal mining, coal washing, coking, chemical industry, cement and building materials, refractories, limestone mining, iron ore mining, ore dressing, ore agglomeration, power generation, iron smelting, special steel smelting, railway transportation, comprehensive equipment manufacturing and maintenance, etc. From 1906 to 1945, Benxi Lake Coal and Iron Company produced 18.48 million tons of coal (the state-owned Benxi Coal and Iron Company dried up and closed in July 1999), 5.2 million tons of coke, 4.96 million tons of rich iron ore (6 million tons of rich iron ore buried in Nanfen), 2.61 million tons of lean iron ore, 3.44 million tons of pig iron, and 17637 tons of special steel

1948年10月30日,本溪解放后,本溪煤铁公司被人民政府接管,改称“东北行政委员会工业部本溪煤铁公司”。2008年10月,本溪湖煤铁公司溪湖厂区的厂房设备全部退出了生产。
