On August 2, 1922 (June 10, 1922 in the lunar calendar), typhoon 8.2 in Shantou, Guangdong, which caused the most deaths in China in the 20th century, occurred

A tropical cyclone in the Pacific typhoon season of 1922. The storm formed on July 27 and dissipated on August 3, lasting for a week. This typhoon has caused damage to the Philippines and Guangdong Province of China, especially Shantou City, causing serious loss of life and economic property. Therefore, it has been listed as the top ten meteorological disasters in the 20th century by the China Meteorological Administration

It is reported that the storm surge caused by the typhoon at that time was at least 12 feet higher than usual, and all the dikes 150 kilometers along the coast were damaged. The typhoon also brought heavy rain to the area. In addition to the astronomical spring tide, Shantou has an average water depth of 3 meters and a vast ocean in the coastal area, resulting in the flooding or collapse of residential buildings. Some neighbouring villages were completely destroyed. It is reported that the ship was here at that time“ Cai Sheng No.” The ship blew on the Rupeng Mountain,“ Shandong No.” Stranded on the mountainside of Goumuhan, two small freighters were blown to Houxi, Chaoyang County, and Butterflies crossed the mountainside. In addition to causing property damage, the typhoon also took about 40000 to 80000 lives in Shantou. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that the death toll is more than 60000, and may even exceed 100000

The following photos were taken by Roy Maxwell Talbot, an American employee working at the customs at that time:
