Even the Korean Interim Government (November 1938 to May 1939) once moved its residence to Liuzhou. Since the fall of Guangzhou and Wuhan, Japanese planes have been carrying out air strikes and bombing against Liuzhou

On November 8, 1944, the Japanese 13th Division entered the northern suburb of Liuzhou near Changtang via Dongquan to invade and occupy Liuzhou City, which was then blocked by the Chinese defenders, but failed to stop the enemy’s offensive. On November 11, the whole city of Liuzhou was quickly occupied

1945年4月至8月，中国军队第2、3方面军在广西南丹、龙州、阳朔、全州等地，对日军第6方面军实施全面反攻。此时盟军已攻占琉球群岛、硫磺岛，日本本土形势危急。抵抗过程中日军力不从心，无法抵挡中国军队的进攻，开始逐步收缩并撤退。至5月中、下旬，在柳州的日军部队全线撤退。

但日军撤出柳州前却制造了焚烧全城的滔天罪行。据统计被焚烧的房屋占当时柳州全城房屋的2/3以上，尤其是河南岸百分之九十房屋被烧毁。就算没有被烧毁的房屋的大门、窗户、楼板等全被拆除当柴烧了。

柳州收复时，美军摄影师的镜头记录下了日本侵略者的罪证，可以看到这些照片中到处是断壁残垣，房屋十不存一，柳州城几成废墟。
