When Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was the King of Qin, there were eighteen counselors in his mansion. After he ascended the throne, he specially ordered Yan Liben to draw eighteen scholars’ pictures. After the Song Dynasty, they were often presented in the form of elegant gathering of scholars. Yao Wenhan painted this volume in the 17th year of Qianlong, with Ji Huang’s regular script “Praise of the Eighteen Scholars”, which is the same composition as the “Painting of the Eighteen Scholars of the Tang Dynasty in the reign of Liu Songnian” in the courtyard collection. The color is bright and beautiful, the pen is fine and vigorous, the figure’s face is slightly shadowy, with a three-dimensional sense, and the details of all kinds of furniture and utensils are well described.
