  • Description:
Dong Qichang mentioned that when he was waiting for the release of the sluice gate in the cold winter of Beijing and in the boat on his way home, he wrote some works one after another to amuse himself. This volume was composed by his friend Chen Jiru (1558-1639) who chose the best. The whole volume includes self transportation and copywriting. It is written with several styles of calligraphy, which is natural and appropriate. Its contents range from ancient articles to personal calligraphic theories, and it is an elaborate work. Although Dong Qichang ridicules himself as a poor mouse with five skills and thinks that he is far from the ideal realm, considering the quality and nature of this work and the selection of his friends, it is obvious that these are polite social remarks, perhaps to remind the audience not to ignore the wonderful work.
