- Description:
Since the Southern Song Dynasty, there have been many works copying the “Picture of the River during the Qingming Festival”. By the middle of the Ming Dynasty, a large number of works had emerged. Among them, Qiu Ying (about 1494-1552) was the most popular, and painters were also scrambling to copy it. There are no fewer than dozens of copies of Qiu Ying’s Picture of the River during the Qingming Festival, and we have three in our collection. In the three versions, the brushwork and color are different, and the cutting arrangement is also increased or decreased due to copying the subjective interest of the painter. This painting is short in scope. At first, it depicts a vast countryside. In the middle section, it is the Hongqiao Market, and in the back section, it is the inside and outside of the city wall and the marketplace. The layout is monotonous. The rocks are delineated in thick linen, and the lines are regular and formatted. The strokes are weak, which is different from Qiu Ying’s exquisite and skilled pen.
