This scroll depicts a dove standing on a dead branch. Shen Zhou asked himself, “How can the sound of a dove on a branch call rain?” So the painting was named accordingly. In the literature of the Song Dynasty, the themes of painted doves such as apricot blossom, peach blossom or crabapple dove seeds can be seen. Poets in the Northern Song Dynasty such as Ouyang Xiu and Huang Tingjian, according to the custom and knowledge that the sound of the dove is rain, called “the sound of the dove calls rain”, which is a popular term.
