  • Dynasty: Ming dynasty
  • Category: Ceramics
  • Function: Container
  • Material: Mineral/ceramic/porcelain
  • Description:
It is shaped like a gourd, with a small mouth and a hidden circle of feet at the bottom. The main decorative pattern is divided into upper and lower sections. The upper section depicts the birthday star sitting on the stone step and the Queen Mother of the West riding a phoenix in the sky, with children and fairy deer interspersed between them. The next section depicts the eight immortals who walk between the waves and clouds with their treasure holding tools, showing the auspicious implication of a group of immortals celebrating their birthday. In addition to the main pattern, the junction between the mouth and the middle section is painted with scales, and the interior is decorated with branches and flowers. The eight immortals are painted with Ruyi clouds filled with flowers. The tire is exposed at the bottom and ring foot. The gourd bottle was one of the common shapes after the Song Dynasty, and the “pottery book” in the “Dazhi of Jiangxi Province” also recorded the production of eight immortals in Wanli official kilns in the Ming Dynasty. Although this product has no style mark, it is similar to the Wanli Dynasty products in terms of the patterns of the scale brocade ground and the characteristics of the bottom feet, and the motif of the group immortals’ birthday celebration can also respond to the records in the Great Annals of Jiangxi Province
