Although the title of this axis is “The Painting of Ming People Copying the West Garden Collection”, the theme should be “Nine Elders of Fragrant Mountain”, which is similar to the composition of “The Painting of Nine Elders of Fragrant Mountain without Payment” in the courtyard collection. The picture is cut by giant pine slope stones, and three people on the left hold the scroll to watch; The three people below look forward to talking; Two people on the right of the center focus on playing chess. One person watches, sometimes accompanied by a child servant. The “Nine Elders of Xiangshan” refers to the gathering of Bai Juyi, who was seventy-four years old in the fifth year of Emperor Wuzong’s Huichang (845) of the Tang Dynasty, and eight friends over seventy, including Hu Gao, Ji Lei, Zheng Ju, Liu Zhen, Lu Zhen, Zhang Hun, Di Humo, Lu Zhen, who returned to Xiangshan in his later years.
