Lu Zhi is not only good at painting landscapes, but also at painting flowers and birds. At present, there are about 40 flower and bird paintings in his handed down works, both in fine brushwork and freehand brushwork. In Lu Zhi’s long life of seclusion, gardening is also a part of his life. According to records of his friend Wang Shizhen, Lu Zhi is keen on gardening, especially planting chrysanthemums. There are hundreds of flowers and trees in Zhixing Mountain Garden. After long-term observation of plant ecology, Lu Zhi can accurately grasp the shape of flowers, leaves and branches, and convey unlimited business on paper silk with skilled brushwork and fresh colors. This volume of fine brushwork flower painting is painted on silk. The brushwork and color design have the charm of the Song Dynasty people. It depicts the scene of flowers blooming, half opening, budding, and the posture of leaning back. It is Lu Zhi’s masterpiece of observing the life of a 65 year old mountain resident. In the order of painting, there are sixteen kinds of apricot flowers, cymbidium, jackfruit, peony, pear, begonia, lily, crape myrtle, rose, gardenia, begonia, morning glory, okra, camellia, green calyx plum, narcissus.
