- Description:
At the bottom right of this axis is Wu Bin’s inscription, “Wu Binzhai, the head of Zhiyin Nunnery, worships and writes with his heart”, with a seal. Goddess of Mercy painted with sutras in his hands, hair in a bun, robe, and a Buddha on his forehead. The boy beside him holds a fish basket, which shows that this is the image of Guanyin in a fish basket integrated with folk beliefs. However, unlike the general female dress, Guanyin in the painting is more neutral. This is related to the argument in the late Ming Dynasty that the Goddess of Mercy did not need to restrict the appearance of men and women. This axis is similar to the style and size of the Painting of Buddha, which may be made in groups.
