- Description:
Zhang Lu (about 1490-1563 AD), named Pingshan, is a native of Xiangfu, Henan Province. He was once a college student, but later he gave up his career and became famous for his painting skills. The vigorous and bold lines in this painting are derived from the painting technique of Zhejiang School. The theme is the story of Lao Tzu’s exit. It is said that Laozi decided to leave Hangu Pass in the west because he felt the decline of the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, Yin Xi, who was guarding the pass, found a purple cloud in the east, and speculated that a saint would come. Soon, Lao Tzu, who was riding a cow, appeared and, at Yin Xi’s request, wrote down the Tao Te Ching before leaving. Therefore, this story has become a symbol of good luck among the people.
