Seven star cypress refers to seven cypress trees planted by Prince Liang Zhaoming at the beginning of the sixth century. Located in Changshu County, Jiangsu Province, it is a famous local historic site. Painters living in neighboring areas in the Ming Dynasty, such as Shen Zhou (1427 – 1509), Wen Zhengming (1470 – 1559), and others, have depicted these ancient juniper trees many times, and some of their works have been handed down. This painting depicts a scholar sitting between Gu Hui. Although the author’s name is unknown, his pen is quite steady and powerful. It is speculated that it may be a masterpiece of Wen Zhengming’s students.
