Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1368-1398 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, underglazed,
Subjects:leaf bamboo symbol fungus the three friends of winter
Dimensions:Height: 31.50 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain yuhuchun bottle with underglaze red decoration and cut-down neck. This heavily potted pear-shaped yuhuchun bottle stands on a spreading foot ring. Its profile is slightly asymmetrical, reflecting the movement of the potter’s wheel during construction. The base is glazed and a little grit adheres to the foot ring. Beneath a milky-white glaze the bottle is painted in copper red which has misfired to an ashen brown-red colour. The design shows auspicious plants, including a gnarled pine tree, lingzhi fungus, bamboo, prunus and plantain, together with rocks and smaller plants all growing upright in a continuous band. Around the neck is a band of tightly packed feathery plantain leaves above a band of key-fret and another of tendril scroll work with pendant ruyi heads below. Above the foot ring, which is decorated with scroll work, is a band of lotus-petal lappets. The bottle has a cut-down neck.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Pine, bamboo and prunus are grouped together as the ‘Three Friends of Winter’, so called because they are the only plants to be seen in the depths of winter. The former two retain their colour and the prunus flowers even in the snow: thus they symbolize steadfastness and constancy. The pine also signifies longevity. Furthermore the bamboo is a metaphor for the Confucian ideal of an upright gentleman as it bends but does not break even in the strongest wind: so should a man of right moral conduct endure change but remain true. Prunus symbolizes hope of the spring, rejuvenation and endurance of extremes as it is the first flower to bloom after winter.
