Comments:See AOA Christy CorrespondenceLetter E H Fraser, Chungking/C H Read, 14 June 1893’Your request for waterpipes reached me some time ago, but it was only yesterday that I managed to get the real bamboo article. It is made in country & is not for sale in shops. These I send cost 2d. apiece – you will notice only metal is a bit of iron wire to keep tobacco in the “bowl”. I also send a bamboo pipe, used by all chair & other coolies. It costs 1/8d. or so….’
