Description:
This unusual and highly decorative porcelain hookah (water-pipe) base has a globular body with rounded base, tubular neck with flanged lip and collar. It is painted in the famille verte palette with green and black enamels and with iron-red. There are also details in overglaze blue enamel and extensive gilding. Outside are large lotus, peony and chrysanthemum flowers. The base is elaborately painted with an iron-red chrysanthemum flower head surrounded by a blue and green foliage border, lotus lappets with a band filled with faux Islamic calligraphy lines. The neck is decorated with prunus, lotus and other auspicious plants.Originally this hookah base would probably have been made for a customer in Mughal India and its form is based on an Indian metalwork prototype.
