Pitching arrows into pots had been a popular game from about 770 BC. Competitors took turns to send arrows into the neck or tubes and the winner was the one who successfully pitched all his arrows into the vase. The losing player took a drink at each miss. Elaborate rituals and rules, recorded in the Li Ji (Book of Rites], added further complexity to the game. In the Ming dynasty, the game became more widespread and was played by rich merchants as well as the aristocracy and scholars.
