Description:
Zhangzhou export ware porcelain vase of form inspired by ancient bronzes, with two large square handles. Painted in Swatow style with red, green, turquoise and black overglaze enamels. Band of chevrons in red at rim and flowering branches at neck, in red and turquoise. Two large ogival panels enclosing mythical animal qilins on body, with lotus sprays in between. Auspicious emblems on foot.

Merchants traded them to countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia as well as to Japan and Holland. They are characterised by coarse sandy bases. The designs are all rendered in free and spontaneous brushstrokes. This example is modelled after a bronze altar vase and is painted in polychrome overglaze enamels with qilin.
