Dimensions:Length: 8 centimetres Width: 9.50 centimetres
Description:
This is an assortment of strips, rectangular and triangular pieces, pattern woven with warp and weft in different colours, and showing a conventional floral scroll with long narrow leaves, repeated 34 cm in the warp direction. The red colour of the wefts is almost faded to white in places. There are eight fragments of triangular shape, and all have one rolled and one stitched edge each. One piece also has a selvedge of 0.8 cm intact. Stein collected twenty-two fragments of this type of fabric from Cave 17, of which five are now in the British museum. The partly reconstructed floral pattern is in a naturalistic style similar to those of the Liao and Song dynasties. Weave structures: Warp: silk, S twisted, single, yellow, 46 ends/cm; Weft: silk, untwisted, single, red, 27 lats/cm. Weave structure: 5/1S twill for pattern on 1/5S twill for foundation.
