Description:
There are two fragments of silk samite originally from the same piece. The triangular one is now in theBritish Museum (MAS. 872) while the narrow strip is in the V&A (LOAN:STEIN.304). They are woven with red wefts for the ground; with white and alternately blue, green, and yellow for the pattern. The pattern is probably a composition of Z-shaped and lozenge designs, but the fragments are too small to reconstruct convincingly. The long strip in the V&A is actually made of two different pieces of polychrome pattern woven silk that have been stitched together. The longer piece, which is the main silk samite, is red and white with a zigzag and/or triangular design elements, while the shorter length shows a floral design in red, blue and white. Stein discussed fragment (MAS.872) in Serindia, but did not mention strip (although it is illustrated in pl. CXI). Weave structures: Inner warp: silk, untwisted, single, red, 22 ends/cm; Binding warp: silk, untwisted, single, red, 22 ends/cm; Weft: silk, untwisted, red, white, yellow, green and blue, 28 passes/cm. Weave structure: 1/2Z weft faced compound twill. 這兩件緯錦殘片原屬同一織物。藏于大英博物館的爲三角形，而藏於V&A博物館爲細長條形（LOAN:STEIN.304）。均以紅色緯線作地，白色緯線常織顯花，藍、綠、黃三色緯線分區顯花。其圖案很可能是一種鋸齒形和方勝形相結合的幾何紋樣，但由於殘存織物太少，圖案無法完整復原。 組織結構： 經線：明經：絲，無撚，單根排列，紅色，22根/cm；夾經：絲，無撚，單根排列，紅色，22根/cm；緯線：絲，無撚，紅、白、黃、綠、藍色，28副 /cm；組織：1/2Z向斜紋緯重組織。

Comments:In the Stein Register this textile fragment was originally registered as MAS.871. However. it was published in Whitfield 1985 as MAS.872 and associated to the wrong Stein number. Its latter registration number has been preserved for concistency with the published catalogue.
