Comments:The concave pommel has an outer band of five pairs of finely incised confronting stylized dragon’s heads encircling a quatrefoil motif with a central perforation in the centre of the design. The convex underside with wide bevelled edges has a circular groove from which three slanting perforations have been drilled. Warring States. See Rawson 1995, p.296, cat.no.21.5. This thick disc of jade is concave, sinking towards the central hole. The curved surfaces are softly polished. On the upper surface are two registers of decoration. The outer one contains five pairs of finely incised confronting dragon heads, and a four-petalled motif at the centre. The convex underside has a bevelled edge and a circular groove, from which three incised spurs are drilled. A similarly concave sword pommel has come from the tomb of the King of Nan Yue at Canton. A group of forty-three fittings stored in a box in the tomb of the King of Nan Yue is an indication of the high value of such fittings to their owners. We can only speculate as to their intended use, which might have been as gifts, as equipment for faithful followers, or for the king himself to use on weapons that he might acquire in his future life.
