Comments:Jones 1990Jade swordThis jade bears no resemblance to an ancient piece. Despite its pretentious inscription in a debased form of ancient seal script, which claims that it belonged to King Guang Wu (AD 25-55) of the Han dynasty, it is far removed in type and style from any Han period jade or even bronze weapon. The shape is based upon a late Ming or Qing sword. Similar weapons are illustrated in encyclopaedias, such as the seventeenth-century ‘San Cai Tu Hui’, and it is possibly from some such source that the shape was derived in error. The jade is very thick and clumsily carved.2 extra labels: “1486” and “D707 + 4 Japanese characters”
