Description:
Porcelain stem cup with underglaze blue decoration and silver mounts. This heavily potted stem cup has rounded sides and a flared stem with a glazed recessed base. Four distinct fish in different attitudes, with waves and aquatic plants, are outlined in ‘pencil-style’ underglaze blue. The stem is decorated with stylized waves and rocks and the base is marked simply with a double ring. Wide silver mounts with dental edges and corded bands mask the mouth and foot without obscuring the base.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Small tea bowls (diameter 7 cm), bearing a similar ‘pencil-style’ design of fish among water weeds, were recovered from the wreck of the Witte Leeuw, a Dutch East Indiaman which sank in 1613 (see BM 1921.1107.1).Silver mounts were added to this stem cup to enhance its value, probably in Europe, possibly in Holland or Germany where such porcelains were much admired. Hobson dates the mounts to 1530, but this is impossible because the porcelain could not have been made until the Wanli period.
