Description:
Porcelain stem cup with underglaze blue decoration. This stem cup has a rounded bowl, a solid spreading stem with stepped edge and a recessed base. Modelled after a Xuande period imperial porcelain cup, it is decorated with nine ‘hai shou’ [sea animals] reserved in white on a ground of swirling blue waves. Two rabbits are reserved in white on the stem and the exterior of the bowl shows a winged dragon with a fish tail, an unidentified flying creature, a flying lion, a fish, a ‘qilin’, a rabbit, a flying elephant, a flying fish and a horse. Inside a conch shell is reserved in white on a swirling ground of blue waves. The base is marked with a six-character Xuande reign mark in a double ring.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Sketchily executed reserved white and line designs such as this are typical of the late Wanli period. Unlike the Xuande originals (see BM 1938.0712.1), Wanli period porcelains decorated with sea-creature motifs have, as here, individual beasts appearing more than once. Another cup of this type was formerly in the George Eumorfopoulos Collection. Stylistically this stem cup relates closely to BM 1921.1107.1, which dates to around 1613.
