Period:Yuan dynasty Production date:1330-1368 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, moulded, underglazed,
Subjects:shell tree/bush,flower lotus
Dimensions:Diameter: 9 centimetres Height: 8.50 centimetres
Description:
Stem cup with raised moulded and underglaze blue decoration. Although of conventional Yuan form, this small stem cup is unusual for its figural decoration. It has a bowl with rounded sides, an everted rim, a hollow flared stem with a horizontal rib in the middle and a thickened base. Inside the back view of a man, standing beneath a willow tree, is shown. The figure’s immortal status is suggested by his lengthy beard and whiskers and by the gourd suspended from his belt. Untrammelled, he appears to fulfil the Daoist ideal of being at one with Nature. Beneath his long billowing robe his shod feet and trousers are visible. A classic scroll ornaments the inner rim of the cup and a pattern of spirals the outer rim. The exterior is painted with a blooming chrysanthemum scroll, beginning with a stem and ending with buds. The lower part of the stem is decorated with inverted alternating large and small lotus petals. Larger petals frame further designs such as a conch shell. Sandy patches and a matte glaze suggest that rather than being an heirloom piece this cup was probably once buried with its owner.
