Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used at the Museum to establish whether the stem cup was painted in an iron pigment or whether cobalt blue had simply misfired. The decoration was found to be ‘cobalt’ pigment of a very inferior quality which used insufficient cobalt to generate a true blue colour in the presence of so much iron. The amount of cobalt relative to iron was estimated to be about 1 per cent.
