Description:
Porcelain brush and ink-stick stand decorated in underglaze blue. This hollow drum-shaped stand has a slightly domed top with four circular openings and one rectangular opening. The top is painted with ‘ruyi’ clouds and the sides with figural scenes. These show a man carrying a sack in a courtyard; a woman catching up with a man carrying a sack and trying to grab it; a man carrying two sacks on a pole across his shoulders followed by a woman. The scenes are bordered above by a white scroll on a blue ground and below with auspicious symbols. The base is marked with a coin mark with the four characters ‘Chang ming fu gui’ [Long life, riches and honour].

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Similar to BM 1973.0726.368, another blue-and-white vessel of this form but with decoration of mandarin ducks in cartouches surrounded by diaper ground and with a most unusual underglaze blue mark, ‘Da Ming Longqing yuan nian’ [Made in the first year of Longqing (AD 1567)], was exhibited in 1997 at S. Marchant and Son, London.
